An HVAC system consists of an array of equipment for heating and cooling a building. Different types of pumps like the booster pump and the centrifugal pump are used to transfer fluids in the system, however, sometimes these pumps malfunction. Here are some tips on troubleshooting pump problems.
The seal may not be durable and may fail due to various reasons. Firstly, it may fail when it is exposed to a chemical environment or excessive heat. Secondly, if it is dry it may get damaged and start leaking.
So it is necessary to fill the pump seal chamber with a lubricating liquid. It should be replaced often. Regular maintenance tasks should be taken up to maintain the seal in a good shape.
When low-pressure bubbles build up in the liquid which flows through the system it is known as cavitation. If this issue is not dealt with promptly it may cause serious problems. It can damage the impeller. Besides this, the pump, seals and bearings may wear out more quickly due to cavitation.
In order to solve this problem you should increase the Net Positive Suction Head or NPSH energy on the HVAC pump’s suction side. For this, you can reduce the liquid’s temperature, decrease the number of valves and elbows, shorten the pipe or increase the diameter of the pipe.
Pump Shaft Is Damaged
A sudden overload or imbalance may break the shaft. Or else, if the shaft which is broken is blue or discolored it indicates that it was damaged gradually due to excessive heat.
To resolve this problem check the pulleys and the belt drive system. Use a belt tension gauge while installing belts. Check if the fan clutch or fan is damaged. To prevent damages see to it that the fan is mounted correctly on the pump shaft.
Pump vibration can be caused due to an unbalanced rotor, clogged impeller, bad bearings, and bent shaft. Vibrations can be system induced, operation induced or mechanically induced.
Check if the bearings are lubricated, replace the ones which are worn out, avoid using the biggest size impellers, check if the pump is worn out, and keep the speed at 1750.
The Pump Wears Out Faster
The pump has to run only for a short while till the thermostat requirement is reached. If the pump is oversized it starts and shuts down more often than a regular pump which is of the correct size. So it wears out faster. This problem can be fixed by choosing a pump which is of the right size and can perform optimally.
Rust and Corrosion
The pump may not work properly if it is rusted. Sometimes deposits may build up in the pump and clog it. In order to fix this problem, check that the pressure cap is working properly. Flush the pump so that there are no deposits which can clog the pump.
